Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer, Payments

Circle is a fully remote platform enabling communities to engage through discussions, live streams, events, courses, and payments. The Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer, Payments will design, implement, and scale subscription billing, invoicing, and monetization features, integrating payment providers while collaborating with product and design teams to deliver reliable, high-converting experiences.

Circle is seeking a Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer for its Payments team to build and scale the monetization engine powering thousands of community-based businesses. This role focuses on subscription billing, invoicing, payment gateway integration, and creating high-converting paywalls and subscription tools.

Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain full-stack features using Ruby on Rails backend and React frontend.
- Lead complex projects end-to-end, including system design, implementation, and payment integrations.
- Build and scale subscription billing and invoicing platforms, handling multiple pricing structures, proration, invoicing, and subscription lifecycle events.
- Anticipate and design for billing edge cases including partial periods, legacy pricing, tax/VAT integration, and failed payments.
- Implement monetization features such as paywalls, upsells, affiliate tools, and subscription settings.
- Optimize checkout and paywall experiences for reliability, UX, and conversion.
- Collaborate with leadership, product, and design teams throughout the feature lifecycle.
- Continuously improve performance, developer experience, and code quality.

Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience building and maintaining complex full-stack web applications.
- Advanced proficiency in Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, CSS/SCSS, TailwindCSS, and MySQL/PostgreSQL.
- Direct experience building or operating subscription billing and invoicing systems in production.
- Hands-on experience integrating payments in live environments (e.g., Stripe, PayPal).
- Strong product mindset with focus on user outcomes and senior-level ownership.
- Experience working remotely on distributed teams and operating in fast-paced environments.
- CEFR Level C2/ILR Level 5 English proficiency.

Bonus Points:
- Experience with advanced Stripe features (Connected Accounts, Subscriptions, Invoicing, Subscription Schedules).
- Familiarity with billing platforms such as Outseta, Maxio, or Metronome.
- Background with community platforms, creator tools, or other SaaS products.
