Job Description

Remote is seeking a Managing Counsel, Product to provide legal oversight and guidance for its HRIS and AI/ML products. The role focuses on embedding risk-based legal review into product development workflows, ensuring compliance across multiple jurisdictions, and advising Product, Engineering, Privacy, and Security teams on complex legal matters related to HR technology and AI features.

Responsibilities:
- Lead legal compliance and product counseling for HRIS and AI features, including AI impact assessments, model cards, and risk controls.
- Draft and negotiate product terms and AI-specific clauses regarding training data, output/IP ownership, acceptable use, and transparency.
- Establish and maintain AI governance frameworks covering model inventory, risk classification, human oversight, bias testing, and incident response alignment.
- Monitor emerging AI and HR-tech regulations (e.g., EU AI Act, US state/federal laws, GDPR/CCPA) and translate requirements into actionable guidance.
- Partner with Privacy & Security on DPIAs, TIAs, incident response, and vendor/LLM diligence.
- Manage external counsel for complex multi-jurisdictional issues and deliver practical, clear solutions.
- Provide enablement through trainings and office hours to product teams.
- Handle complex legal issues independently, providing proactive solutions rather than escalations.

Requirements:
- Seasoned lawyer with extensive product counsel experience; multi-bar admission is a plus.
- Strong expertise in AI/ML legal frameworks, HR-tech, and employment law compliance.
- Experience in in-house counsel roles preferred; startup experience a bonus.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Tech-savvy, familiar with Slack, Juro, Notion, Google Drive, or equivalents.
- Fluent in English and capable of translating complex legal concepts into clear product requirements.

Benefits:
- Fully remote work from any location.
- Flexible working hours with asynchronous work culture.
- 16 weeks paid parental leave and flexible paid time off.
- Mental health support services, stock options, learning and home office budgets.
- Inclusion in a globally distributed, values-driven team with asynchronous workflows.

This role offers the opportunity to provide legal leadership on innovative HRIS and AI products in a global, remote-first environment.
